
How would you like to enrich your life with the traditional lessons handed down by one of the great tribes of Plains Indians?
Join us for this weekend-long immersion in the teachings that make up The "Cheyenne Way."
This program will introduce you to the world of the Cheyenne in a way that no book, movie or video ever could-- through the oral tradition, as taught by a learned and well- respected elder of the tribe.
Workshop activities include:
Stories as the source of traditional knowledge
Participation in dances
Discussion of Cheyenne ceremonialism
Introduction to the history of the Cheyenne
Talk entitled "Walking the Red Road"
Beadwork project
Introductory lesson in Cheyenne language
Playing traditional games
Workshop leaders:
Moses Starr Southern Cheyenne elder and ceremonial leader from Weatherford, Oklahoma. Moses is well known among the Cheyenne and other Indian communities in Oklahoma as a singer and m.c. at pow-wows and dances all over Plains Country. He serves as camp crier at the annual Cheyenne Sun Dance. He is also an advisor whose council is often sought by members of his tribe.
Robert Vetter Anthropologist who holds an M.A. from University of Oklahoma. Bob has conducted ethnographic fieldwork among tribes in Oklahoma since 1980. He is the adopted son of Moses Starr.
Cost:$195 per person. Includes all events, dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday. Half-price for children under 18 (must be accompanied by a paying parent or adult family member). Deposit is $40 per person.
Cost does not include lodging. Limited camping may be available. Those traveling from outside the area can find nearby lodging in motels and hotels.
Location: buildings and a beautiful wooded area near Smithtown, NY on the north shore of Long Island. Driving directions will be mailed after you register
